First Church Notes: 11.05.2017

FUMC Pittsburgh celebrates Holy Communion on the first Sunday of every month.

To begin our week with Warren UMC we will hold our traditional Thanksgiving All-Church Dinner on Sunday, November 12th right after church. As always we could use helpers to make the dinner happen and also are in need of people to help clean up after. Please note the sign-up sheet on the clipboard table if you are willing to help.

The planning for the week of November 12th -19th with Warren United Methodist Church has been underway for many weeks! Please plan to worship at Warren UMC on November 19th and stay for the fellowship dinner afterwards! The church will provide shuttle service to Warren Church on that Sunday. If possible, please confirm your attendance to help with planning by calling 412- 621-2253. This is a unique event intended to strengthen our ties to our siblings in the Hill District and to share our experience of God together.

A Leadership Training Workshop provided by The Southwest PA Healing Communities Collaborative is being held on Nov. 18th for formerly incarcerated individuals. If you know someone who might like to participate in this event, contact Scilla: (

Also on Nov 18th, from 6-8 PM, a panel will be discussing Embracing the Returning Citizen at Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church, 6111 Rodman Street 15206.

If you would like to learn more or participate in the Healing Communities work at First Church, see Anais or send her an email:

Nov. 5 John Detwiler will lead us on the subject: “Society and Climate Change.”  For two Sundays, we’ll be considering our society’s response to the challenge of climate change.  It’s not to be a “science class,” but a candid discussion about “who’s been doing what/” and “Why does it seem to be so hard to get focused?” We’ll be looking at public opinion, economic issues, and legal battles, and at our own emotional reactions to what’s been happening around us.

Nov. 12 John Detwiler: “Society and Climate Change” Part II

Nov. 19 David Keller will lead us in a discussion about the book, Strangers in Their own Land, Anger and Mourning on the American Right, A Journey to the Heart of our Political Divide.

Nov. 26 David Keller will lead us in a discussion about hate groups in America.  Resources will be from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

A new adult Sunday school class on race has formed and meets at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.  Discussion will be focused on race; we’re going to be reading: “We Were Eight Years in Power” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Coffee and bagels too!  Class will be led by Sam Procter.

First church, in order to better care for one another as a community, we are asking for your donations to help fill up the Caring Cupboard.  Each week we will be asking for a different item.   The item of the week: Sleeping Bags and/or Mats.

The Eco-Ministry Team is meeting Tuesday, November 7 at 7:30 P.M.  We are discussing the Genesis creation story on being “created in the image of God” and its meaning for care of “the land”. We are also looking at how the scriptures refer to active relationships among all members of creation.  We are using Patricia Tull’s Inhabiting Eden. Feel free to join in. Additional copies of Inhabiting Eden are available. See Claudia Detwiler for a copy. For those who don’t want to begin a book, other eco-theology resources will be available.

Mark your calendars! Our annual Christmas Season music-fest will happen on Saturday, December 9th at 7:00pm. This is a family friendly music event that features the Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, and many other musical offerings. This year the choir will be presenting John Rutter’s “Gloria” with a full brass orchestra. Come and hear the vibrant and exciting music of our season and stay for a wonderful reception afterwards.

MESSY CHURCH Nov 13th @ 5pm Join us on the second Monday of each month to celebrate the joy, play, and mess of God with art, games, story, and food!

Clear plastic gallon size bottles are needed by the Hospitality Committee to make luminaries for the Dec. 9 choir concert. Bottles must be thoroughly rinsed out and their labels removed (use a hair dryer for quick removal).    Bring your donations on Sunday morning and place them on the stage area in the gathering space any time until November 26.

The church is open every Wednesday with an environment of welcome. You are invited to just “be” with us. Several worship, study, and meditation opportunities are all happening at once in our spiritual marketplace. A snack and food table will be open in the Gathering Space at 6:30 for you to eat and, if moved, bring food to share too! Childcare is provided.

Worship Jam is a community that seeks and celebrates the spiritual essence of life through earth-based traditions, Christian mysticism, and scientific revelation. Please join us any Wednesday at 7pm in the chapel.

Early Response Team Training is available through

ERT training prepares you to respond to those in need in the aftermath of a natural disaster.  We need “listeners” as well as workers and those who support teams with prayer & financial support.  Volunteers trained & not trained are needed now to assist in local cleanup.  Sign up on the conference website or contact Fred Watts.
