ALL CHURCH PICNIC – August 6th

Come and join your First Church family for a potluck picnic after worship on Sunday, August 6th.  We will be in Fellowship Hall if very hot or rainy and also in the courtyard under tents for shade.

We need a couple of volunteers with portable grills, who would be willing to bring their grill to the church that Sunday and flip hotdogs and hamburgers (provided by the Hospitality Team).  Please let Karen Merrick know if you can do this (email:  crimmerr@aol.com).If you are able and willing to bring a dish, please consider a vegetable/starch item if your last name begins with A through M.  If your last name begins with N through Z, some kind of salad or fruit would be appreciated.  Birthday cake will be our dessert as it’s August Birthday Sunday!  Hope to see you there!

MESSY CHURCH 2nd Mondays 5pm

Do you like to get messy? Be creative? Experience joy? Join us for Messy Church on second Mondays, in Fellowship Hall!  Messy Church is a worldwide, all-ages, fun experience of church. It is open to all members of the community. We celebrate that everyone is welcome to come exactly as they are — and we are not just talking about clothing. All are welcome as wiggly, as playful, as messy, and as hungry as you truly are. For more information, find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/fumcpghmessychurch.

LUNCH AND LEARN -Sunday, August 27th

There will be a lunch and learn after worship on August 27th to explore the realities of incarceration in our nation and in our neighborhood. Join us for discussion, reflection, and an exploration of the ways that our community can respond to the needs of people impacted by incarceration. Questions? Talk to Anais.

MY LIFE IN JERUSALEM  —   AUGUST 27

Tina Whitehead has been in Jerusalem and the West Bank since 2006, working with Palestinian Christian organizations but connecting also with the Muslim community.  During this past year, she has had the opportunity to share the Palestinian story with Christian tour groups who stay at hotels in Bethlehem.  Come and hear her story.

 WEDDING INVITATION

You’re invited to celebrate the marriage of Constance Clive to Alexander Morin, 4pm on Saturday, Sept. 16th here at First Church.  A cookies and punch reception will follow in Fellowship Hall from 4:30-5:30pm. In lieu of gifts, the couple request that a donation be made to First Food and Friends.

ALL CHURCH RETREAT

All Church Retreat (Oct 6-8, 2017) Planning Task Force will meet on Sunday, August 20, 2017, after worship. Even if you did not sign up to be on the task force, you are welcome to join in the planning. It is not necessary that you attend the retreat … we just need ideas! Please see Lee Shaw with questions.

BRING YOUR CLOTHES TO THE CHURCH!

If you have clothes that you are hoping to get rid of, please bring them to the church. We have clothing bins here at the church to fill. All proceeds from the clothing bins will support our summer youth mission trips.

RECYCLE BATTERIES OPPORTUNITIES

How does one respond to the mandate to “recycle batteries responsibly.” Where can you take them?! Good News!  Our church’s “Eco-Committee” has two recommendations: (1) you can take your batteries to Target in East Liberty and deposit them in the bin marked “Electronics” at the bottom of the escalator, or (2) you

can bring them to church on Sunday morning and put them in the “Recycle Batteries” bin located in the Gathering Space before or after worship. David Keller will take your deposits each week to his home where they will be stored for a “at your door pickup” every two months. Please bring your batteries only on Sunday morning so that deposits will not become a distraction to other church business during the week.  Please no car batteries; only small to mid-sized batteries. Questions, speak to Dave or email RevDFKeller@aol.com.

WORSHIP JAM: LET EVERYTHING YOU ARE PRAISE GOD!

WEDNESDAYS 7pm   –  Worship Jam involves your whole self in worship. Each week, we take a verse or two from the lectionary readings of the week and explore it through interactive, multi-sensory, and playful ways. Worship Jam is a community that seeks and celebrates the spiritual essence of life through earth-based traditions, Christian mysticism, and scientific revelation. Please join us any Wednesday at 7pm in the chapel.
